Reading Athletic Club's, Jonathan Davies completed a remarkable 7 days this past Saturday, off the back of gaining a bronze medal at the English Schools cross country last weekend, which in turn earned him selection for the England team at the British Schools Cross Country this Saturday just gone.
Jonny surpassed expectations and claimed his second bronze medal in 7 days as on his England debut, he finished 3rd in the race in Antrim, he was right amongst the mix for medals with only a sprint finish deciding the medals as he finished behind the winner, Ahmed Hassan from Scotland and James McMurray from England.
It brought a fitting end to what has been a really superb season for Jonny and he and coach Rob McKim will have been delighted with his progress this season.

Jonny gains England vest with bronze medal at English Schools!!!!

Reading Athletic Club's, Jonathan Davies produced the race of his life this past Sunday, as he competed at the English Schools cross country championships at Nottingham. Representing Berkshire, Jonny produced a perfect race in the U17 men's race to come home a superb 3rd place and with gain selection for England in the up-coming home nation's cross country fixture. For Jonny and his coach, Rob McKim, it is a pleasing result of the past 2 years work that has been put in, going into the race, he always felt had had a medal chance, but he executed his race well and fittingly was rewarded with the bronze medal. Jonny will now gain his first England vest, as he will head up a strong England team to face teams from Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

Reading throwers show good early season form with medals at Throws Open!

Reading Ac saw a number of their throwing squad travel to Newbury this past Sunday as they put their winter training to test, with one of the first outdoor open meeting's of the season.
The Arthur Kilberry throws memorial open meeting was again a large success and the club saw many of its athletes come away with medals across the 4 throwing events.
Julie Wilson led the way with some very consistant performances, striking with 2 golds, a silver and a bronze. Her gold medals came in the shot and discus events, with efforts of 9.12m in the shot and 31.22m in the discus. Her silver medal came in the hammer throw in which she threw 31.69m, whilst her bronze medal came in the javelin event, where she threw 22.31m.
Becky Keating had a successfull day in the U15 competition with 2 silver medals, her first coming in the shot putt event, where she threw a new personal best of 9.64m, showing some very good early form and will no doubt be looking for the 10m mark before long. The competition in this age group for this event is very fierce however, as Amy Herrington also set a new pb as she took the bronze medal with 9.57m, whilst club mate, Chelsea Pritchard, was hot on the heels in 4th place with 9.53m, all 3 girls will prove very strong in this event this season and will all be looking to break the 10m barrier before too long.
Becky's second silver medal was to come in the hammer throw, in which she opened her 2011 account with a 24.64m effort, Amy Herrington collected her 2nd bronze of the day with a 23.54m effort in the same event. Chelsea Pritchard gained a silver medal in the discus throw as she threw a good 29.74m for 2nd place, with Amy also taking part and gaining 4th position. Rounding off this age group, Katherine West claimed herself a bronze medal with a good opening effort of 26.70m in the javelin.
In the U17 age group, Danni Opara and Amy Holder are going to prove quite a pairing this season in the throwing events, particularly the shot and discus and will take some beating. In the shot, U17 captain, Danni, threw a superb 11.01m for the silver medal, with Amy also throwing well with a 9.46m distance for 4th place. In the Discus, Amy was amongst the medals this time as she gained bronze with a good 30.91m effort, with Danni throwing 26.96m.
Charlotte Webb showed good early season form, particularly in the discus, a good effort of 33.10m was surprisingly only good enough for 4th place, however she gained herself a bronze medal in the shot with a 8.92m effort.
On the male side there were some equally impressive performances. Ben Taplin led the way with a very good javelin effort as he struck silver with a distance of 47.19m. Peter Savery is going to be quite an asset to the veteran throws squad this summer, he produced 2 very good performances, firstly in the shot with a fine effort of 10.33m, and then in the discus where he threw 23.39m.
Daniel Webb got himself amongst the medals in the U15 boys age group as he threw the hammer out to 18.97m for the bronze, having earlier finished 9th in the shot putt.
Chris George and Mitchell Felix competed in the U17 men's age group. Chris showed good early season form, finishing 5th in the shot putt with a 10.89m effort, whilst in the discus he finished 6th with a 28.58m effort. Mitchell showed he is again going to be a vital scorer in the hammer event, he threw 42.44m for a 5th place finish. Finally James Greenlaw enjoyed his first outdoor competition this year as he competed in the shot and discus events, in the former he threw 4.83m to finish in 7th place and in the latter, achieved his best result as he took 4th with a 17.12m effort.

Reading girls amongst medals at SEAA cross country relays!

Reading Athletic Club's female cross country squad produced one of their best set of the results this past Saturday as the club travelled to Wormwood Scrubs park to contest the inaugural South of England cross country relay championships. A new event for 2011 the event proved highly enjoyable with the races run over much shorter distance than normal, making for some fast exciting races, also giving athletes the need to possibly adopt different tactics to normal.
For Reading's female athletes they seemed only to thrive on the more faster and frantic nature of the races.

The first race up was the U17 & U20 race that was ran combined but scored separately, it was to set the tone of the day as both Reading teams gained medals in the opening race!
The U17 ladies fielded 2 teams and their a-team was led off by Beki Taylor, who ran a strong leg to put them in medal contention, handing over Cerys Aicken in 3rd place, Cerys then proceeded to clock the fastest club time as she moved her team into 2nd place, leaving Rosie Bishop to only further the distance between herself and the bronze medal position, to give the girls the silver medals. Their b-team also fared well, led off well by Naomi Forshaw, Bethan Taylor ran a good 2nd leg before Emma Taylor rounded things off to bring her team home 4th.
The U20 team were led off well by Anna Boniface, who gave a good effort to get Reading up into medal contention. Hayleigh Wood kept the team in the medal hunt as she covered the 2.5k course well and looked particularly strong in the final 1000m, whilst Hayley Randell ran the last leg and crossed the line to give her team the silver medals and claim Readings second set of medals of the day.
The U13 girls were the next race up, again fielding 2 complete teams. Katie Holt led them off and a special mention and a huge amount of credit must go to her. On a packed start line she got tripped and was bundled to the ground and when she got up she was in last place, however she showed great maturity and got right back into the race and proceeded to claw back some 26 places to lift her team back into the top 10, producing what was surely one of, if not her best performance to date, to hand over to second leg runner, Georgia Walton. She too had a fine leg, starting very strongly as she came back in 7th place. Lois Meredith was handed the task of tackling the last leg and she did so superbly, holding on well to give the girls a superb 8th team finish. The b-team also fared well, led off strong by Lauren Church who showed a lot more confidence in her running, Loren Hunter then proceeded to produce a strong second leg as her improvement continues, leaving Charlotte West to round up things on the final leg for a strong b-team performance.
The U15 girls race was probably the pick of the bunch. Again the club fielded 2 complete teams. With 6 girls who are all fairly evenly matched, making selection extremely difficult and as the race got underway it was clear that nothing was going to separate the 6 girls. Lauren Herrington got things underway for the a-team with Charlotte  Moore doing so for the b-team. Both girls showed the right intention and was soon amongst the leading pack. For Charlotte she was to produce the race of her life and finally showed the potential she has been showing in training and she brought the b team home ahead of the a team with Lauren just a couple of positions behind. Ella Saunders then set off on leg 2 for the b team and Mollie Haines for her a team. Both girls running fantastically, Mollie clawed back some ground but Ella still gave her team the advantage as Andi Vietz off on the final leg, with Katherine West just 15 seconds behind her running the final leg for her team. Both girls again running superbly. With 800m to to Katherine has just edged ahead of Andi, but neither was giving ground as they battled until the end, with Katherine eventually pulling away in the final 80m for a superb leg, whilst Andi most certainly will have been delighted with her best performance for over a year. This left the a-team with a tremendous 6th place finish, with the b-team equally as brilliant in 7th.
It was then the turn of the senior women to round of the day, and they did not disappoint as they fielded 3 complete teams. Rachel Phillips was tasked with leading off the a-team and she gave a very solid effort over the 3k course to hand over to second leg runner, Nicky Cooke in 6th place. Nicky produced a solid leg to maintain theirs teams place in the top 10, whilst Sue Francis rolled back the years with a vintage performance on leg 3 to lift her team up into a brilliant 5th position.
Debbie Taylor had a pleasing opening leg for the b-team, Hayley Pearce continued her good recent form and covered the ground well, leaving Sarah Wilkins to produce a good last leg to give the b-team 11th and 2nd placed b-team.
Charlotte Phillips had a very pleasing leg on her opening leg for the c-team. She is beginning to show some good form and very timely for the forthcoming track season. Caroline Stevens showed good form on leg 2 whilst Andrea Curson wrapped up proceedings up for the club with a good final leg.
It rounded off what was a very good day for the club across all age groups. It certainly saw a vastly improved effort from the younger girls, showing what they really are capable on, through all the races, everyone gave a really solid effort and Reading Ac were the ONLY club to field teams in EVERY age group on the day, showing what a healthy state the club is currently in.
